- Explore Machu Picchu – one of the New Seven Wonders of the World
Follow one of the world’s most famous trails to the ancient city of Machu Picchu! Setting off from Cusco, our trek leads us along gushing rivers, through ancient tunnels and over high mountain passes to the Sun Gate. The sight of Machu Picchu appearing through the morning mist is one that will stay with you forever!
What our participants say:
“Absolutely great adventure to Peru to do the Inka Trek. Made some fantastic friends. Treated so WELL by all the team. Our guides were just brilliant. Food was lovely. What was cooked and served up the mountain was just mind blowing.”
June, Inca Trail Trek
Why Peru is special:
“The people, food, but basically the history, and thousands of beautiful places where I can enjoy nature. They are many more things in my country!”
Ruben, Tour Guide on our Inca Trail Trek
What our leaders say:
“During my career I’ve been very fortunate to have visited many countries throughout the world including Costa Rica and Peru. I can say categorically that Peru has to be my favourite.
I love the country, the people, its fascinating history, many amazing places of interest and of course the varied and delicious food. You can visit Lima the capital, take in the Inka sites above Cusco, visit the amazing lost city of Machu Picchu… The choices are endless. Cusco is a destination dream as it’s a hub for lots of exciting adventures. Explore the city, visit the Cathedral, take in the tempting markets or just hang out in one of the cafes around the Playa de Armas and people watch. Whatever you choose, Peru will stay in your heart as it has in mine.”
“My top tips:
- Give yourself time to acclimatise and walk slowly. Don’t be surprised if you are breathless. This will steady after 24 hours.
- Drink coca tea as it helps you adjust to the altitude Bring a selection of clothing as once in the Andes you can have 4 seasons in one day.
- Drink water/ tea regularly
- Wear high factor sun cream as the sun is really strong at altitude. Don’t get caught out.
- Fabrics and textiles are a great purchase and Peru is great for this. Silver jewellery is also a great buy.”

What's your role at GAC?
Next year I’ll have been a leader for Global Adventure Challenges for 20 years and I’m proud and and blessed to have experienced so many exciting adventures with thousands of brilliant and inspiring people over the years.
Where have you travelled in Central & South America?
I have traveled quite a lot through Central and Southern America. I salsa and merengue danced my way through Mexico whilst teaching English and learning Spanish, explored ancient Mayan ruins on the Ruta Maya through Belize and Guatemala, surfed and cycled my way around Costa Rica, trekked and climbed in the high altitudes of the Cordillera Blanca, drove down the Pan American Highway, browsed the witches’ markets in Bolivia and lived in a shanty town in Lima for a summer.
With Global Adventure Challenges I’ve shared my experience of this part of the world, and added to it, on the Inca Trail, in Costa Rica and on the Cuba Bike Ride.
Which is your favourite trip?
Costa Rica will always have a special place in my heart because that’s where I went on my honeymoon. There’s dense rainforest, rolling cloud forest, volcanoes and palm fringed Pacific and Carribean coast lines. It’s so rich in nature and wildlife, the landscape is spectacular and it’s an outdoor adventure playground. More impressively Costa Rica has made a firm commitment to protecting this environment. 25% of the country is now protected national reserves and even the country's main domestic airline is carbon-neutral. So you can enjoy an intense immersion in this impressive natural environment whilst leaving minimal impact. And still find some late night latin beats!
Any top tips?
My top tip for enjoying your adventures in Central and South America would be to learn a little Spanish. Enough to order a nice cocktail, ask for or accept a dance and connect with your local guide or say Hey! to a local.
