Ask the Team - Amanda McCarroll
What's your name, and what's your role at GAC?
Amanda McCarroll, Trek Leader at GAC.
What would you say to anyone considering the Camino de Santiago Trek?
Be prepared for this UNESCO pilgrimage route to be emotional on all levels, like the thousands of pilgrims that have walked the paths before you come rain or shine there is a warm welcome along the route. The lushness of the Galician countryside is breathtaking along the with architecture of the villages especially the tiny churches you’ll pass through.
What's your favourite thing about Spain?
My favourite thing about the country is how different the landscape & people are to southern Spain - the interesting food & drink ( Tart de Santiago is the best Almond cake ever ) But nothing prepares you for your entrance into the Cathedral square at the end of your pilgrimage along with entering the Cathedral.
What do you think is the highlight of the challenge?
The highlight for myself was the city of Santiago itself - thoroughly beautiful & intriguing with a wealth of history & stories of pilgrims who have passed through. If time permits a full day exploring is recommended. Exploring the back streets & secret doorways into the Cathedral. Stamping of the ‘passport’ along the route & exploring the history of each stamp.

Northern Lights Trek
- A chance to see the stunning Aurora Borealis
- Trek through the Geothermal Valley
- Celebrate our achievements in Reykjavik
Spend a long weekend exploring Iceland's volcanic landscapes and colourful mountains! We'll start with a trek to the shores of Lake Þingvallavatn, Iceland's largest natural lake, before hiking to the Vörðuskeggi Mountain Pass and exploring the Geothermal Valley. Our adventure comes to an end with a dip in the Blue Lagoon - the perfect way to rest our tired legs.
What's your name, and what's your role at GAC?
Anna Crampin, Main Leader for various GAC overseas trips
What would you say to anyone considering the Northern Lights Trek?
Go! Iceland is a world away but not far to travel. It’s a geographer's dream with volcanoes, the Mid Atlantic Rift, glaciers, northern lights and geothermal activity all around from fumaroles to hot bubbling rivers. It’s all beautiful to explore and being very close to the Arctic circle the conditions can be invigorating.
What's your favourite thing about Iceland?
My favourite thing about the country is how the conditions can go from being challenging to utterly luxurious. For example a tough hike through the snow can unexpectedly lead to settling into a bubbling jacuzzi in a geothermally heated river.
What do you think is the highlight of the challenge?
Seeing the Northern lights dance in the ski after a tough trek through a magical landscape with a belly full of Icelandic local food.
